Estimated that 820,000 elders became victims of elder abuse in 1994
The National Aging Resource Center on Elder Abuse (now the National Center on Elder Abuse) estimated that in 2004 there were 820,000 elders became victims of elder abuse. 106 percent increase in the number of reported cases between 1986 and 1994, from 117,000 to 241,000.

 

Elder law is one of the newest and fastest growing specialties in the legal profession. It combines elements of Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts, Conservatorship, Health Care Planning and Medicare/Medicaid Planning. It draws upon the experience of elder law attorneys representing older clients in legal decisions affecting their eligibility for disability, social security and other public benefit programs including services supported by the Older Americans Act.

The older population, persons 65 years or older, numbered 35.9 million in 2003. They represented 12.3% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030.
